Meet the blogger: Mindy Miles Greenberg

This morning we're meeting Mindy Miles Greenberg, of EncoreDecor who will be joining the DDB's Spring Market Bloggers Lounge in just 9 days...

Where are you from? I am a native New Yorker that stumbled on home design after many years working in retail store display/design.

What did you do before blogging? I've collaborated with world class organizations like: Louis Vuitton, Donald Trump, Benjamin Moore, Hilton and even Ringling Bros. on the branding and presentation of their property. All my past employers have taught me how to stretch creative boundaries and re-define the definition of "design". It always amazed me that each product manufacturer, store owner or mall management company had such a unique vision of what they wanted to convey to their target consumer. I was hired to make their "image", actually happen on the store level. I am fortunate to have had many mentors. Soon after I turned my focus to working in homes, I was invited to be on a regular segment on HGTV, which lasted many years.

How long have you been blogging? I launched my blog about three years ago as a way of connecting with the design world, reaching out to my past clients and because I wanted to do it as a personally fulfilling creative journey. 

What's your blogging schedule like? My posting frequency happens organically, not on schedule. I don't post daily, but make sure my posts are filled with content that reflects my point-of-view. Sometimes it takes hours to create a post, but I guess it takes that long to create a multi-course meal - so since posts live-on in cyberspace, it's time well spent!

Favorite showrooms at the DDB? I love shopping the DDB. All my time there is project driven, so I don't rush home to blog about the latest and greatest every night but save it up for a day with less excitement. It's hard to keep-up with the demands of running a design firm, so I have a file-pile that has ads, papers, fabrics, ideas, etc. that's my go-to for inspiration. Some of my favorite haunts are: Kravet, Romo, Creation Baumann and Lewis Mittman. I love the modern lines by Windsor Smith and Kelly Wearstler.

How do you shop the building? I always spend some time checking out the entrance window displays to make sure I don't miss anything new. My usual routine is to take the elevator to the top floors and walk down.

What else should we know about you? With my blog, Twitter and all the other social media outlets, my reading has been mostly on the computer. I do love to attend events, and thanks to the DDB's design community, there are so many opportunities to meet, greet, mingle and learn. Fact-taking for posts very much reminds me of note-taking in school - it didn't come naturally, but I worked hard to make the grade.  Since the world has changed at such a fast pace, I love the idea of being about to speak my mind, break the rules and be myself using this blogging medium. And since it's my name on the front door, I have nobody to answer to! It's a wonderfully liberating creative endeavor.

Tending Trends: Plethoras of Perforation Pock the DDB (Part 2)

Less is more for our newly spotted design trend at the DDB. With perforated products popping up in showrooms all over the building, we love seeing what creative ways designers are spinning perforations and cutouts throughout collections.

The new Donghia showroom boasts perforated patterns in fabrics such as Mirror, Mirror, which creates a sparkling statement by combining hand-woven silk with small pieces of mica embroidered into laser-cut spaces in the fabric, or Stella, part of the Sahco collection that features a dense white ground weave from which small pieces are cut out by laser. At the same time, the heat of the laser seals the edges of the polyester weave. The effect is lace-like, and the intricate floral design seems like a silhouette.

"Perforated fabrics and products add a new facet to design," said a designer who was shopping at Donghia. "By adding the texture with laser-cut designs, instead of with the more traditional uses of texture, the possibilities within a space widen even further and the whole design process really gets fun and creative. I personally love the way perforated curtains can look, because they affect a room so, so much in every single kind of light the day is giving you outside!"

Yesterday, Harry Daniell, of Harry Daniell Design, started exploring Romo's collection at the DDB. Here's more from Harry on how to make a room fit for a queen using one of Romo's newest collections.

Where is the femininity you ask? Romo's unique High Society collection offers daintily feminine, linen and viscose based fabrics that tell a story all their own. The collection's patterns make an excellent option for throw pillows, which is what I envision using the Garland Autumn pattern for—what a perfect Harry Daniell Design tastemaker combination!

Garland Autumn is light and whimsical while still holding on to its elegant and demure look, so mixing the pattern into a different color palette or design isn't challenging. The pattern is light and simple, making it easy to blend with other patterns, and because of the several colors within the pattern, it's also a breeze to match it with any corresponding color within it.

A final favorite of the High Society collection was one that I couldn’t help but highlight. The Tea at the Ritz Pear features a trilogy of women in their elegant gowns. The pattern is available in six color ways and is nothing short of a clear statement-maker. Buy it now, thank me later!

When designing a room, a circle and diamond shaped print adds the initial layering of color, which brings me to the “AHA” moment. Introduce the Delphi Veridian, with teal blue fabric that is perfect for strong colored panels of drapery and throw pillows, for the neutral sofa and chair fabrics. It is in the completion of details that bring this fabric palette full circle. Throw in some teal artwork and table lamps and this room is sexy, chic and sophisticated!

Teal! Teal! Teal! Teal is one of the colors of the season, and with jewel tones trending in hospitality design, it’s not a big surprise that teal is a hot color this season. Loving Romo Fabrics, I challenged my team at Harry Daniell Design to pull teal colored fabrics—simple!

In reviewing the samples, I wanted to pull together a collection of fabrics that read sophisticated and masculine with a touch of femininity and livability. I loved the Shimoda Verdigris pattern, which would not only look phenomenal on a large sofa, but would also be so luxuriously comfortable!

Remaining with the striped theme but in stronger tones of brown and teal, the combination of Viscose and Cotton is velvety soft to the touch and equally easy on ones eyes.

In layering in a teal fabric infused pattern, I imagined for the window treatments the Mazara Veridian pattern as a perfect choice.

Sophistication, fun and whimsy all sewn together create the latest collection of fabrics available at Romo. Bearing the fabulous name High Society, the collection offers three distinct looks that I especially adored. First, I loved  the elegant and neutral patterns in the collection because despite a more toned-down color palette, these patterns still impress with a huge POP of color!

What’s one to do with a blank slate for a living room, when designing a space? Well, imagined here is a room fit for a king and queen, as layered with products from Romo.

Imagine Lotus glistening wall covering (LOA-LOA4993) as the backdrop for this magical living room. This paper shimmers like the ocean as viewed while aboard a boat; its presence makes the walls speak and come to life! It really is a must see, in person!

In staying in suit with the textured paper, I imagine the Misa Platinum fabric for a soft and comfortable fabric-covered sofa. This textured fabric creates an ambiance of elegance and refinement, yet does not travel down the path of boring.

Remaining in the gold tones, and infusing the beginnings of the pop of color in the fabric, I meticulously selected the Cybelle Viridian fabric. The fabrics selected thus far will be accentuated beautifully with natural and artificial lighting; this element is essential in capturing the true spirit of these fabrics!

In the News: Zinc Textiles New Collection Celebrates Miami (Part 2)

The Miami collection celebrates the mood of the city it's named after, featuring bold printed velvets, carnival silks and punchy geometrics that work together to evoke poolside glamour and steamy Miami nights.

The Miami collection incorporates an impressive mix of qualities and designs sourced from and developed with mills from around the world. They contain the same undiluted glamour and quirky, asymmetrical charm that defined Zinc Textiles initial launch two winters ago. As part of the summer collection, the Miami collection explodes with color and style, leaving us lusting for more.

Eight designs celebrate the vibrancy and visual excitement of Miami, incorporating subtle references to Art Deco and the 1950’s Populuxe design style, Versace-esque chains and 1960’s Op Art, in colors that project confidence and a daring sense of fun.

Product Spotlight: Romo's Zinc Textile Launches Five New Collections

Five brilliant new collections for Spring and Summer 2011 have just arrived at Romo as part of their line of Zinc textiles. The new fabric brand from The Romo Group is only two years old but you would never know from the complex, rich fabrics found in the collections.

Zinc Textile's newest collections incorporate an impressive mix of qualities and designs sourced from and developed with mills from around the world. They contain the same undiluted glamor and quirky, asymmetrical charm that defined Zinc's initial launch two winters ago.

The collection is laden with sparkling glass-beaded fabric, foil printed velvets and stone-washed chenille. Woven silks and delicate sheers sculpted with metal wire are just some of the highlights to be found amongst these captivating collections.

"Zinc is really about the city," said Justin Marr, Designer of Zinc. "And just as the city comes alive as night, so do many of the designs through textures that play with light."

Folia

Adding to their already extensive and distinctive collection of contemporary wallcoverings, ROMO has introduced their Folia Collection.  Folia is a collection of stylish, semi-plain wallcoverings with subtle designs inspired by intriguing aged textures and surfaces — think glass mosaics, crackled paints, and pleated rice papers.  These papers are certain to be a beautiful addition wherever they are used.
