Mark Pollack steps aside

Recently, Mark Pollack, co-founder of the textile company Pollack, announced he was promoting Rachel Doriss, VP of design, pictured below, to take over his responsibilities.

He will remain an involved consultant and co-owner. We came across this terrific profile of the man himself, with tributes by colleagues and industry friends, in Reviews Land and thought you'd enjoy reading about the influential Pollack as much as we did.

Textiles with a sense of PLACE

Kristie Strasen has spent more than 30 years designing, coloring and styling textiles for both residential and commercial clients. She launched her own collection, Place, in January 2006, and we've been following her ever since. As its name suggests, Place is inspired by distinct locations, both in each collection's color palette and textures. She never introduces more than one or two collections a year, focusing on presenting an edited, refined assortment.

Her latest, Moon Festival, was unveiled this winter and is now available at Pollack at the DDB, David Sutherland at the PDC in L.A., DCOTA in Florida and DCH in Texas. Future Fortune, a polyester, is pictured above. It takes inspiration from an ancient Chinese tradition that found its way to Thailand over 3000 years ago. In Thailand, it honors the summer harvest and pays homage to the moon.

This is Sky Lantern, a polyester with 1 percent cotton added:

Lanterns are set afloat in the sea and launched into the sky, and participants let go of their negative thoughts and celebrate their good fortune. Strasen's collection pays homage to this idea with a shimmering, though subtle palette of silver and golds, made even better in their high-performance. Each is incredibly durable making them ideal for commercial applications, with a soft hand that makes them workhorses in residential projects, too.

Event Recap: Student Design Day Gets Inspired with Pollack

The DDB's Student Design Day-goers were all ears at Pollack's Inspiration, Imagination, Interpretation presentation, led by Rachel Doriss, Pollack VP of Design. Sparking inspiration and examining how choices of material, construction, pattern and color are resolved, Rachel explained how a physically functional and aesthetically pleasing fabric is created.

"While I was still a student at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), we were taken on a field trip to New York City, and one of our destinations was the D&D Building," Rachel said. "From that very first time, I've always loved this building, but it also pushed me to wonder how we design fabric. Ever since, I've been searching out artistic creativity and using that to help me imagine and design beautiful fabrics.

"When it comes to design, any kind, you have to find what it is that inspires you. My inspiration comes from everywhere and everything: traveling the world, my son, construction sites, city blocks, the way wind blows the sand on a beach; it's everywhere. Inspiration and creativity is simply about combining what you see on the outside and what you already have on the inside."

Rachel explained that for herself and others on the Pollack design team, they often find and revisit places and things that inspire them so that they are always ready to create, design, and make. Sharing the process of her trade, Rachel used slides of her favorite photographs and images that became sketches, then digital designs, and finally the fabric made based on the initial stages.

"While studying at RISD, I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I knew what I loved doing,” she said. “Eventually, I learned that there was a job for exactly what I loved doing, and once you can put a name on the exact job you want to spend your life doing, the only thing to do next is to pursue it!"

In the News: Pollack & Weitzner Merge

Big things are happening at Pollack this year. Textile designer and Design Director of Pollack Mark Pollack and designer Lori Weitzner if Weitzner Limited will be working together as a result of a merger between Pollack and Weitzner Limited. The collaboration will build a more diverse product offering for designers and consumers.

“The Pollack and Weitzner merger is a textbook example of the perfect business consolidation,” said Rick Sullivan, President, CEO and CFO of Pollack.  “We’ve taken two of the best brand names in the industry and added increased growth potential and the economies of scale. The merger provides product diversity and increased working capital for the consolidated company. It’s a 'slam-dunk' winner in all respects – for our brands, our employees, our business partners and our clients.”

Within the next year, Lori plans to expand into textiles, with the introduction of her own fabric collection. The brands will remain separate with respect to each company’s design studio, aesthetics and distribution.

“Lori is a marvel in the design world, and I have always admired both her amazing talent and her enthusiasm for design,” said Mark.  “I think that this merger will energize both of our studios, with their uniquely different styles, but with a common commitment to excellence. It is such a unique opportunity for all of us.”

“I have admired Pollack since they began 23 years ago; an amazing company with beautiful products and beautiful people,” added Lori. “I am humbled and incredibly honored to be their partner."

DDB Spring Market Buzz: Environmentally-Savvy Shopping Techniques

Environmentally sound, eco-friendly, green—after a while, they can all sound the same, or like nothing at all. Pollack's Spring Market event at the DDB helped clear the semantic confusion with their discussion, Demystifying Environmentally Responsible Fabric Decisions.

Kristie Strasen, Founder and Creative Director of Place Textiles, led the talk and gave her common sense approach to sorting through the best choices for specifying environmentally responsible fabrics from the rest.

In a time when everyone is aiming to do the right thing, Kristie explained that there is more than one way to address such a complicated issue of being an environmentally savvy shopper. With over 30 years experience, Kristie has been developing a comprehensive range of high-end fabrics, which the audience got to see first hand during the talk.

"So what does 'green' or 'environmentally responsible' fabric even mean?" Kristie asked the audience. "The truth of the matter is, 'green' in the context of environmentally-responsible fabric means different things to different people. Some people are looking for fabrics made from recycled fiber, while others are interested in fabric produced from rapidly renewable resources. Many people think organic fabric is the best route to take while many others seek a fabric that is truly sustainable. So, what does it all mean?"

Kristie explained the differences between the many terms people use when they are aiming to be 'green,' and helped to demystify the concerns behind responsible fabrics. Ultimately, the best advice Kristie wanted to share was making the effort to know where your fabrics and fibers came from.

"When people take these different terms into consideration, they are attempting to make intelligent decisions and this helps the big picture," Kristie said. "Unfortunately, there is no one right answer, but there are ways to avoid being unknowledgeable about how you shop for your interiors. There are many ridiculous ways to claim that something is eco-friendly or green, but if you know where stuff comes from—such as cotton, wool, banana leaf—you're making the first and best step towards deciding on a fabric that is more natural and organic, less harmful to the environment as well as renewable."
