LA Print Space enters the PDC

One last gallery to mention! LA Print Space will join Wharton + Espionsa and Hudson|Linc as the three brand new gallery additions to the PDC for Design Loves Art.

This one however, is not your typical art gallery. According to curator, Cathy Weiss, LA Print Space is a space dedicated to contemporary printmaking for the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, a non-profit print group.

“Not only will we be having exhibitions but we will have artist talks, demonstrations and be a place for gatherings for everyone interested in printmaking,” said Weiss.

The first exhibit entitled, Sea of Exchange: Ireland – Los Angeles, features a group of artists from both Ireland and Los Angeles, including artist Donal MacPolin.

“MacPolin will be coming from Ireland to build a currach for the launch of the Los Angeles Irish Film Festival,” said Weiss. “I was asked to curate an exhibition for the festival and so it all fell into place and with the timing of the festival it worked out to be our first exhibit.”

The exhibit will run from September 19 through November 1, but Weiss says the opening reception with the currach is something you don’t want to miss.

What’s up next for LA Print Space? A show on car culture is coming in January and a show with work from South Africa is in the planning stages.

“I am so thrilled to be a part of Design Loves Art and am so excited for this opportunity to have a space that will service the contemporary print world bringing work from all over,” said Weiss.

Be sure not to miss the opening night receptions on Wednesday, September 19 from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m., as Design Loves Art showcases LA Print Space and 14 other new gallery exhibits at the PDC. For more information visit their website, here.

Hudson|Linc enters the PDC

Here comes another brand new PDC gallery! Hudson|Linc will join Wharton + Espinosa for Design Loves Art with their debut exhibit, on September 19.

Co-Curated by Nick Lisica and Steven Wolkoff, Hudson|Linc’s first exhibit will feature four Los Angeles based artists working in a faux naïve style.

“My co-curator Steven, he kind of saw this moment in LA that looked like young MFA students are purposely taking a naïve look at things,” said Lisica. “They are extremely talented and professionally educated but they are approaching things very differently.”

The artists that will be showing their work in this exhibit entitled, Neo-Americana, include Gavin Bunner, Zeal Harris, Ami Tallman and Dan Van Clapp.

“I think everyone we are using has interesting work in all different styles, but they’ve never been shown together before,” said Lisica. “Seeing them together will be very interesting.”

The exhibit opens on September 19, as a part of Design Loves Art’s new gallery launches, and will run for about a month.

Wharton + Espinosa enters the PDC

Big things are happening at the PDC! Design Loves Art announced that they are thrilled to be holding opening receptions for 15 gallery exhibits on September 19. Of those 15, three brand new galleries are hitting the second floor of the blue building, Wharton + Espinosa, being one of them.

Annie Wharton, Co-Director of Wharton + Espinosa (formerly Annie Wharton Los Angeles), decided it was time for a change. After two years of running her space, Annie Wharton Los Angeles, she has teamed up with artist John Espinosa for a brand new gallery.

Annie Wharton

“He came to me with 3 different proposals,” said Wharton. “The one I most gravitated to was an unexpected surprise, to partner with me as gallery co-directors and build out one space. Wharton + Espinosa was born and we took of running.”

The first exhibit, opening on September 19, will run for about and month and will feature artist Eli Langer. According to John Espinosa, Langer’s work will set the stage for their gallery and future exhibits to come.

“It’s about the attitude and tone that Eli's practice and persona are known for,” said Espinosa. “His precise balance of chaos and beauty was the perfect way to set the demeanor of the new gallery identity.”

So, what can we expect to see from this re-vamped gallery?

Much of the old Annie Wharton Los Angeles will shine through, but the pair wants to focus on their collaborative efforts as artists and really work together to bring the best to their new space.

“I am interested in the dynamism that can be created when two brash minds interface,” said Wharton. “I am also particularly intrigued by the unique nexus of art and design inherent here at the PDC, and will be investigating that rich topic in future research.”

Paula Scher: Maps, Prints & Drawings

Works by the celebrated graphic designer and artist, Paula Scher, will arrive at the PDC as a part of Design Loves Art, an arts program launched in late 2009 with the aim of providing a platform to explore art and design. Maps, Prints & Drawings opens on September 19 along with 14 other new gallery exhibits.

Since the early 1990’s, Scher has been re-imaging society’s approach to data and our visual representation of the world through map making. Her maps are like nothing ever seen in an atlas, they are composed of typography and vibrating colors looming large at an outrageous scale.

Design Loves Art Curator, Helen Varola, explains that she chose Scher for this exhibit based on the way she links the world of art with the world of design through her work.

“Our arts program focuses on artists who extend their normal practice towards various media, including design,” said Varola. “Paula Scher, a critically recognized graphic designer, is also a painter who fuses her design DNA onto canvas to forge limitless boundaries for her art.”

Scher’s hand-pulled screen-prints are exquisite renditions of her massive map paintings. Made in collaboration with Andy Warhol’s master printer Alexander Heinrici, each print is realized with the same hand-drawn elegance of her painted maps.

“She is involved in every step of the printing process, redrawing new plates in the same style as the master printmakers of the 20th century,” said Varola. “Her Paris map is particularly stunning!”

There will be an opening night reception on September 19 from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. in Suite B231, and a talk with Scher on September 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the Blue Conference Center, Suite B259. The exhibit will run through November 10 in space B231.
