New York-based interior designer Harry Daniell's philosophy is to let each room tell a story about who you are. In addition to running a full-service residential and commercial design firm, Harry Daniell Design, he also maintains a design blog and is also our newest GoDesignGo Guest Blogger. Read on to get to know a bit more about Harry.
GDG: How did you get started in the interior design world?
HD: Design is something inherently within me from an early age, although I did not know it until I was older. My family was always redoing a room in our winter or summer home and somehow I worked my way into the process and decision-making. I soon grew to love the constant change and update that was occurring around me.
Interestingly, my degrees are in finance and computers. When I graduated college I started on Wall Street and worked non-stop. This has given me a greater sense of business and how to run a design project from the pre-start marketing to finishing touches.
GDG: Has your background on Wall Street had any impact on your clientele?
HD: Absolutely! It's interesting because many of my clients do come from Wall Street and the financial sector and business. Because of this, I understand the pressures and demands they face while at work; this helps me to create a residential space that they feel comfortable in.
GDG: How did Harry Daniell Design come about?
HD: During my career in finance, I was approached by a major modeling agency here in New York and I traveled the world on photo shoots. To keep grounded, I often found myself wandering the streets of Paris, studying the architecture, or in a museum or in the ruins of Mexico, while not on the shoot. THAT is where my true knowledge was acquired. Why read a book about Gaudi, when I could go see his designs first hand while in Barcelona?
Towards the end of my modeling career, I started to help friends with their interior design projects. I needed a new challenge to face; and thus, Harry Daniell Design was born!
