We recently introduced you to Chuck Chewning, Donghia's creative director, and one of the creative minds behind Donghia's showroom expansion. We managed to spend more time with Chuck to ask him about the upcoming showroom unveiling and his own design style.
GDG: Who has been one of your main design mentors throughout the years?
CC: It's hard to narrow down just one, but I would have say David Hicks. I love how he combined historic and modern together while mixing unexpected materials. Angelo Donghia was also influenced by his design throughout his life. Angelo was a master of juxtaposition and much of that was due to how David Hicks inspired him.
GDG: What is your most prized possession?
CC: A large-scale 19th century classical temple in plaster that was the model for a family mausoleum. I discovered it in an antique store in Milan when I was living in Italy and it has meant the world to me ever since.
GDG: Can you tell us about your personal design style outside of the Donghia showroom?
CC: I would have to say that my personal design style is eclectic. My background is in historic preservation of architecture and interior design at SCAD so I do love all periods of design. Mostly though, I believe in a collected look that reflects a personal style.
GDG: What were some of the main sources of inspiration for Donghia's new showroom?
CC: The personal interiors of Angelo Donghia and the inspired design and creativity that he embodied were an enormous inspiration. I admit that I borrowed on Angelo's timeless room settings and combination of contrasting materials for the Design & Decoration Building's new Donghia showroom.
