Rose Tarlow heads outdoors with Sutherland

On Wednesday, the David Sutherland showroom at the DDB held a mid-afternoon cocktail party (it's 5 o'clock somewhere!) to celebrate the latest introductions. Rose Tarlow Melrose House and David Sutherland, Inc. collaborated on two furniture collections and a full suite of high-performance textiles for the Perennials label. Jobst Blachy, the new CEO of Rose Tarlow Melrose House, just 8 days into the job, was on hand to toast the final results. We introduced you to him last week.

Sutherland and Tarlow have worked together for nearly 30 years. "Rose and I have always appreciated fine quality and design," David Sutherland, CEO of David Sutherland Inc. says, "Our collaboration reinforces our commitment to both of these elements and brings us together again after many years."

Both Cat's Cradle and Rising Moon are produced from sustainable teak.


The 70 fabrics, available in five colorways, are all made of 100% solution dyed acrylic, which makes them soil, mildew and UV resistant. Says Ann Sutherland, president of Perennials, "Rose adds a sophisticated collection of designs that enhances the Perennials offering. In color and style, this is a superb group of textiles."

The collections are now on the floor in all David Sutherland showrooms and at the RTMH flagship showrooms at the DDB and in L.A.

Rose Tarlow announces new CEO

Jobst Blachy has just joined Rose Tarlow Melrose House as its CEO. Native mid-westerner Blachy joins the Los Angeles-based company, founded in 1976, with almost twenty years of experience in the home furnishings industry. Most recently he was President of Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman, and VP of Trade Showrooms & Retail Stores. Under his leadership, the company launched the William Yeoward brand to the US market to great acclaim.

Says founder and designer Rose Tarlow, "Jobi has an impressive background in the luxury home furnishings space, and we are thrilled to have him at the helm of this brand. He joins us at a pivotal time in our expansion and we are confident that we will benefit from his tremendous leadership and insight."

DDB Spring Market Buzz: Rose Tarlow Smells Like Roses

It seemed only fitting that the Rose Tarlow showroom's Spring Market event, Authenticity in Design: A Series on Living and Entertaining, included heaps of roses and other flowers. Van Wyck & Van Wyck, a family-owned event design and production firm, hosted the event teaching showroom visitors how to pair flowers together with tasteful design. We even got our own bouquet to take home!

"We wanted to have an event that was more casual in nature, where the atmosphere was less structured and more relaxed," said Showroom Manager Stacy Sinclair. "Bronson Van Wyck, President of Van Wyck, was here to give one on advice and answer any questions that our guests had."

The questions for Bronson ranged in topic matter and included tabletop, lighting, food, music and, of course, flowers. Van Wyck had a team of three floral designers on hand to arrange nosegays with guests as takeaway's, which made visitors positively delighted.

"I love my flower arrangement!" said a Spring Market-goer. "I can't believe I get to keep these! I loved learning the best combinations for my flowers and understanding how to better compose a bouquet. It was so much fun!"

"I loved everything that was going on at the DDB for Spring Market!" Stacey told us. She got a chance to wander around throughout the day and stop into other showrooms for their events. "It was such a wonderful way to welcome in Spring. At Rose Tarlow, the Van Wyck team was just amazing! Bronson and Mary Lynn Van Wyck are so charming; it was such a pleasure to have them here for our first Spring Market."

"The flowers were spectacular. Having such a wide variety of color and species under one roof was so wonderful! We had a great crowd with visitors throughout the day and into the early evening who heard about the Van Wyck flowers. They were all hoping that we had one last nosegay for them!"

Duralee/Highland Court (Suite 815) and Philip Gorrivan introduce Philip's newest collection, Philip Gorrivan II from 12:00 - 12:45 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Don't miss the cocktail party at Pierre Frey (Suite 1611) at from 5:00 - 7 p.m. Pierre Frey will be there to celebrate Spring Market with you while sipping a few cocktails and publicize the showroom's brand new website.

Rose Tarlow to Receive Design Leadership Award

The Decorative Arts and Design Council (DADC) of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will honor designer Rose Tarlow with its third annual Design Leadership Award next month.

The Design Leadership Award honors an individual or company whose outstanding achievements have set a high standard in the field of design. As a designer, educator and author, the Council recognized Rose Tarlow's extraordinary design contributions and the longevity of the furnishings company she founded, Rose Tarlow Melrose House, which will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2011.

“California more than at any other period in history is experiencing what it means to be at cross roads of the world. The world is watching us,” said Rose Tarlow. “What an exciting time for LACMA to have undergone such an amazing rebirth. The museum is today a major cultural institution that establishes Los Angeles as a highly respected contributor to the world of art. I am deeply honored to receive this prestigious award and truly appreciative to be continuously challenged working in a profession that I love.”

With funds raised from the Design Leadership Award Celebration, the Decorative Arts and Design Council—chaired by Los Angeles-based designer Oliver Furth —will acquire an Art Deco table by Jock Peters for the Bullock’s Wilshire department store. This table will be part of the Decorative Arts and Design Department’s forthcoming exhibition, California Design 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way, opening October 1, 2011.

“For 35 years, Rose Tarlow has created remarkable furnishings, assembled with a brilliant sensibility. Through her publications as well as her extraordinary body of work, she is a passionate, eloquent spokesperson for the power of design in all of our lives,” said Wendy Kaplan, Department Head and Curator, Decorative Arts and Design, LACMA.

Ms. Tarlow will design an original vignette centered around the table, to be displayed at Rose Tarlow Melrose House on December 9th during the cocktail reception and award presentation event.  To commemorate the event, Rose Tarlow Melrose House created 350-limited edition ceramic ivory vases. A percentage of the proceeds of this vase will be donated to the Decorative Arts and Design Council to support future acquisitions.
