Design Loves Art: Sept 19 at the PDC

One highlight to summer drawing to a close: the revving up of the fall events calendar! We can't wait till Wednesday, September 19 at the PDC when Design Loves Art will kick off with opening receptions from 5-9pm for 15 galleries. The second floor of the building will feature works from celebrated graphic designer Paula Scher whose "Global Climate" acrylic silkscreen is pictured above. Scher, whose show runs through November 10, will host a talk on September 20 at 2pm. Serving as the artist's LA debut, an installation by Will Ryman will fill the Blue Lobby, remaining up through February 1, 2013. Joanie and Dennis Franz, the husband and wife developers behind Big Red Properties and prominent members of the Santa Barbara community, have planned an exciting collaboration of design and philanthropy set in one of California’s most prestigious neighborhoods – Montecito! The Santa Barbara Design House and Gardens gives some of California's most talented interior designers a turn to showcase their talents in a “Hamptons” style house is nestled on 1.62 acres of prime gold coast land. Originally an avocado farm in the 1950’s, the estate is located on Featherhill Road and anchored by majestic California Coastal Oak trees, some over 250 years old.

Design Seminar Series at the DDB

The DDB's DESIGN SEMINAR SERIES continues with DESIGN HISTORY SERIES on the HISTORY OF THE INTERIOR. Sign up now and brush up on your decorative arts history. This five-session program examines the history of the 20th-century interior through the filter of the major design movements that influenced the modern home. The Birth of the Modern Home | CE145-W-A 
The campaign for the modern home and the transformation from Victorian concepts of domestic culture into those adhering modern living were initiated by William Morris and the fathers of the Arts and Crafts Movement. In the wake of industrialization, they proposed alternative visions of production that integrated art and labor as well as manifesto that focused on furniture, furnishings, and the appearance of the modern home. The attempt to reform and renew the domestic sphere through a complete design program in fin-de-siècle Europe, had informed the European Art Nouveau home. Concepts such as an 'artistic' home, the Gesamtkunstwerk interior, nationalism, and a transformation from a historicist tradition into modernist ideals came to inform and define that unique home that tells the story of its time. Two streams and concepts regarding the modern interior were developed in France between the two world wars, reflecting historical-traditional vocabulary on the one hand and an avant-garde approach on the other. Issues such as machine-age aesthetics, mass culture, antimodernism, and domesticity became apparent in the construction of the French Art Deco interior. Breakfast reception to immediately follow.

The DDB Design Files Series features insightful and entertaining lectures, presented by experts in the world of design, art, and culture. Each segment explores creative movements and trends within the context of high design and luxury living.

ASID LA Chapter presents the CEU Seminar Stepping Thru Accessible Interiors as We Age, led by Janis Kent, AIA CASp. The seminar will host a reception and book signing following the lecture.

This seminar covers an overview of accessible issues to consider in our normal environment, whether work, play, or home. Learn about items that can easily be included within our built environments now to not only allow us to age in place but to also allow others to visit us, whether they have issues concerning accessibility or aging.

This lecture will help you review architectural items from entries to doors to restrooms in terms of visit-ability, and become aware of hazards you should avoid in the built environment. Janis will also give an overview of the parameters for furniture, counters, and built-in items that assist in interiors as we age and will help her audience to understand signage, reach ranges, and clearances, and discuss their effect on our places of home and work.

Looking to learn more about working with a custom lampshade designer? If so, the DDB's CEU Series with New York School of Interior Design has just the seminar you're looking for.

Learn the difference between custom and off-the-rack lampshades and find out how lamps are wired and how that wiring affects the style and size of a lampshade. Instructor Patricia Sullivan, of Abat-Jour Custom Lampshades will discuss how to size a lampshade for different types of lamps, how lampshades are sewn and how to choose suitable fabrics, lining and trimming for custom lampshades.

Save the Date: Student Design Day Highlights Emerging Talent in 2012 (Part 3)

The Student Design Day schedule at the DDB is packed with showroom open houses, product launches, and panel discussions. We've given you a few fab events for the morning, and now we're sharing some afternoon delights for you to pencil in.

At 1:30 p.m., Edelman Leather, Suite 207, believes that "today's students are tomorrow's designers"... so please join the showroom and explore a Wonderful World of Leather for Interiors and learn things you never knew! With more than 75 products and 800 colors, Edelman Leather offers total freedom—freedom in color, texture, and style.

At 2 p.m., Fortuny, Suite 1632, hosts Technology and the World of Interior Design. Mickey and Maury Riad, owners of the legendary Fortuny, are taking the interiors world by storm. Every Fortuny fabric is still produced in the same factory, on the same machines, using the same secret process and techniques handed down from generation to generation. Still, just as Mariano Fortuny used his love for the past and respect for tradition to create something completely new, Fortuny today continues to pioneer in the world of design and technology.

At 3:30 p.m., Editor at Large will present How to Succeed in the Design Business, featuring three top designers sharing their post-design school experiences: trials and tribulations of getting started, landing their first job, and recognizing their big break. Tips and advice will be offered on paving a path to success in a rapidly changing industry.

Save the Date: Student Design Day Highlights Emerging Talent in 2012 (Part 2 of 3)

This year's Student Design Day at the DDB focuses on the emerging talent of 2012 and includes a full day of showroom open houses and panel discussions. Here's a look at what you should pencil in this coming Monday, February 9, during the DDB's Student Design Day—and the best part is, this is all before lunchtime!

The programs begin at 10 a.m., starting with the Agostino showroom, which hosts a Welcome Breakfast with art adviser Carole Pinto. The Art of Collecting: Building an Affordable Art Collection is the topic of Pinto’s talk, which is intended to introduce student designers to skills they should add to their design foundation.

At 11 a.m., Creation Baumann, Suite 1522, will host The Window with Erik Bruce. Window treatments are an all-too-often-overlooked opportunity for design in modern interiors. Noted window treatment designer Bruce presents a glimpse into his process: a fresh, new approach to treating windows and dividing spaces in harmony with the architecture. Having served as the principal designer at Mary Bright Inc. for the past eight years, Erik is now creative director of his own studio. He continues to develop inventive solutions for unique spaces, working closely with the architect and/or interior designer of every project.

At 11:30 at Pollack, Suite 1722, Textile 102: Inspiration, Imagination, Interpretation invites participants to start with the spark of inspiration and examine in detail how choices of material, construction, pattern, and color are resolved to create a physically functional and aesthetically pleasing fabric. Techniques for gathering and refining sources of inspiration will be shared, and we will look closely at the specific steps taken in developing a textile from start to finish.  In particular we will focus on the methods—some traditional, others cutting-edge—that designers use to create patterns and textures in fabric.

Lunch will run from noon to 1 p.m. Anichini, Suite 923, and Niedermaier, Suite 417, showrooms warmly welcome students for a special luncheon and tour.

Save the Date: Student Design Day Highlights Emerging Talent in 2012 (Part 1 of 3)

Student Design Day at the DDB takes place a week from today, and with the help of co-sponsors ASID and Editor at Large, this year's event is the biggest yet. A mini-market day, ASID New York Metro Chapter's Student Design Day kicks off with a morning keynote followed by showroom programs, a special design challenge, and a closing event. Editor at Large will sponsor the keynote and the student challenge.

In the design challenge competition, students will design a window space that in his/her unique perspective will represent the best of what the DDB has to offer. The challenge is to see which team can come up with the most functional and visually appealing space, pulling from a pool of pre-existing furnishings. ASID will create five groups of the first 25 students to register online in advance. These contestants, as a team, must design and stage a space using proposed materials donated by a participating showroom.

The group will be given a 45-minute time frame to conceptualize, source, design, and stage their space. At the end of the day, the judges will tour each space and select the winning design. The winning team will have their space photographed and featured (accompanied by a short story including a brief description and name mention) by Editor at Large.
