In the News: ASID Student Design Day Challenge Winners Announced (Part 3)

ASID NY Metro Chapter’s recent partnership with the Decoration & Design Building for a student challenge had the DDB full of students and young professionals eager for the day's events. The schedule consisted of a full day of events with two separate student challenges, a variety of showroom tours, design industry speakers, and a keynote panel sponsored by Editor at Large.

Students and showrooms alike shared in the day's events and mutually embraced the industry and its future. The day ended with many kind words for the building and the event.

"To everyone involved in the Student Day event, I wanted to send my thanks for a superb experience," said Becky Spector, NYSID student. "As a new student at the New York School of Interior Design, I thoroughly enjoyed the event and the information provided by the guest speakers and showrooms staff. The event was very well done. I look forward to many future visits!"

The Student Group Challenge among New York Metro interior design schools produced student teams of five given the task of creating a functional, visually appealing vignette by pulling pieces from a pool of pre-selected furniture within a one-hour time limit. Out of the four teams competing in the challenge, the Art Institute (AI) of New York, was crowned the winner by the panel of judges.

Supporting showrooms Artistic Frame, Anichini, Jerry Pair, Léron, Niedermaier, Romo, Schumacher, Stark Carpets and Vaughan provided accessories and additional items to make this a fun, eclectic challenge.

In addition to the fabulous prizes of installing the winning design in a display window for the individual challenge and publication in Editor at Large for the group challenge, the winners also received the professional 2012 version of AutoCAD generously donated by Autodesk. Lynda.com provided a one-month premium subscription offering a vast array of online tutorial support, and Herman Miller contributed a copy of their new award-winning inspirational DVD, Eames: The Architect and the Painter. The ASID winning goodie bags also contained other design-related tools to help the winners transition from student life into real-world design.

In the News: ASID Student Design Day Challenge Winners Announced (Part 2 of 3)

ASID NY Metro Chapter partnered with the Decoration & Design Building earlier this month for a student challenge. The schedule consisted of a full day of events with two separate student challenges, a variety of showroom tours, design industry speakers, and a keynote panel sponsored by Editor at Large. The turnout was a packed building of students and emerging professionals, not to mention countless impressive design submissions.


Submitted boards were reviewed, and students were interviewed to discuss their concept before the two judges, Mariette Himes Gomez, ASID, and Charles E. Pavarini III, Allied ASID. The judges chose Anastasia Berestova from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). Her winning design will come to life and be on display for the month of March in the lobby of the D&D building. The individual challenge was an excellent opportunity for students to become acquainted with a variety of showrooms, form relationships with staff, and create a successful, dynamic design within very tight parameters.





The Student Group Challenge created some friendly competition among New York Metro interior design schools when teams of five students were set to the task of creating a functional yet visually appealing vignette by pulling pieces from a pool of pre-selected furniture within a one-hour time limit.


Out of the four teams competing in the challenge, the Art Institute (AI) of New York was crowned the winner by the panel of judges: Harry Daniell, Harry Daniel Interiors; Jacqueline Hosford, ASID; Benjamin Huntington, ASID; and Julia Noran, Editor at Large. The students instrumental in creating the winning vignette were Erin Conley, Carlos Coronado, Jessica Williams, Maritz Hevia, and Kristine Boyd. AI’s design concept was to "Create a cohesive space while allowing the two areas to work separately. We were given neutral colors to start with and took a Southwestern-inspired approach incorporating warm oranges and natural materials.”

In the News: ASID Student Design Day Challenge Winners Announced (Part 1 of 3)

Earlier this month, ASID NY Metro Chapter partnered with the Decoration & Design Building for this year's student challenge, creating a full day of events with two separate student challenges, a variety of showroom tours, design industry speakers, and a keynote panel sponsored by Editor at Large. This combined effort allowed hosts and sponsors to embrace future leaders of the interior design industry.

"One hundred twenty students and emerging professionals attended the event, taking the DDB student initiative to a new level," said Ashlee Harrison, Director of Marketing at the DDB. "The building now has 150 new contacts to add to the digital database, and the best part is, they are all young designers!"

Showrooms within the DDB opened their doors for the Individual Challenge, where students created a design concept and rendering, Celebrating the Best of the D&D Building, to fit inside an existing display window in the building’s lobby. Students were given window dimensions and a list of participating showrooms, and were required to create a unique vision using available merchandise.

"In addition to the amazing turnout and participation of the students, we're also so appreciative of the nearly 30 sponsoring showrooms who collaborated on these challenges," said Ashlee. "The showrooms donated their time, resources, and labor in making this happen. For a first-time event, the event evolved and grew [and] proved to be a HUGE success!"

Save the Date: Student Design Day Highlights Emerging Talent in 2012 (Part 3)

The Student Design Day schedule at the DDB is packed with showroom open houses, product launches, and panel discussions. We've given you a few fab events for the morning, and now we're sharing some afternoon delights for you to pencil in.

At 1:30 p.m., Edelman Leather, Suite 207, believes that "today's students are tomorrow's designers"... so please join the showroom and explore a Wonderful World of Leather for Interiors and learn things you never knew! With more than 75 products and 800 colors, Edelman Leather offers total freedom—freedom in color, texture, and style.

At 2 p.m., Fortuny, Suite 1632, hosts Technology and the World of Interior Design. Mickey and Maury Riad, owners of the legendary Fortuny, are taking the interiors world by storm. Every Fortuny fabric is still produced in the same factory, on the same machines, using the same secret process and techniques handed down from generation to generation. Still, just as Mariano Fortuny used his love for the past and respect for tradition to create something completely new, Fortuny today continues to pioneer in the world of design and technology.

At 3:30 p.m., Editor at Large will present How to Succeed in the Design Business, featuring three top designers sharing their post-design school experiences: trials and tribulations of getting started, landing their first job, and recognizing their big break. Tips and advice will be offered on paving a path to success in a rapidly changing industry.

Other participating showrooms include Edward Ferrell, Gracie, Artistic Frame, Schumacher, Lutron, Romo, and Kravet.

Save the Date: Student Design Day Highlights Emerging Talent in 2012 (Part 2 of 3)

This year's Student Design Day at the DDB focuses on the emerging talent of 2012 and includes a full day of showroom open houses and panel discussions. Here's a look at what you should pencil in this coming Monday, February 9, during the DDB's Student Design Day—and the best part is, this is all before lunchtime!

The programs begin at 10 a.m., starting with the Agostino showroom, which hosts a Welcome Breakfast with art adviser Carole Pinto. The Art of Collecting: Building an Affordable Art Collection is the topic of Pinto’s talk, which is intended to introduce student designers to skills they should add to their design foundation.

At 11 a.m., Creation Baumann, Suite 1522, will host The Window with Erik Bruce. Window treatments are an all-too-often-overlooked opportunity for design in modern interiors. Noted window treatment designer Bruce presents a glimpse into his process: a fresh, new approach to treating windows and dividing spaces in harmony with the architecture. Having served as the principal designer at Mary Bright Inc. for the past eight years, Erik is now creative director of his own studio. He continues to develop inventive solutions for unique spaces, working closely with the architect and/or interior designer of every project.

At 11:30 at Pollack, Suite 1722, Textile 102: Inspiration, Imagination, Interpretation invites participants to start with the spark of inspiration and examine in detail how choices of material, construction, pattern, and color are resolved to create a physically functional and aesthetically pleasing fabric. Techniques for gathering and refining sources of inspiration will be shared, and we will look closely at the specific steps taken in developing a textile from start to finish.  In particular we will focus on the methods—some traditional, others cutting-edge—that designers use to create patterns and textures in fabric.

Lunch will run from noon to 1 p.m. Anichini, Suite 923, and Niedermaier, Suite 417, showrooms warmly welcome students for a special luncheon and tour.

Save the Date: Student Design Day Highlights Emerging Talent in 2012 (Part 1 of 3)

Student Design Day at the DDB takes place a week from today, and with the help of co-sponsors ASID and Editor at Large, this year's event is the biggest yet. A mini-market day, ASID New York Metro Chapter's Student Design Day kicks off with a morning keynote followed by showroom programs, a special design challenge, and a closing event. Editor at Large will sponsor the keynote and the student challenge.

In the design challenge competition, students will design a window space that in his/her unique perspective will represent the best of what the DDB has to offer. The challenge is to see which team can come up with the most functional and visually appealing space, pulling from a pool of pre-existing furnishings. ASID will create five groups of the first 25 students to register online in advance. These contestants, as a team, must design and stage a space using proposed materials donated by a participating showroom.

The group will be given a 45-minute time frame to conceptualize, source, design, and stage their space. At the end of the day, the judges will tour each space and select the winning design. The winning team will have their space photographed and featured (accompanied by a short story including a brief description and name mention) by Editor at Large.
