Guest Blogger and DesignIntake writer Julieta Alvarez recently had the opportunity to attend this year's Holiday House showhouse benefitting Komen for the Cure. Julieta spent some time with the designers and now she's sharing with us her afternoon with Ally Coulter whose room theme was Mother's Day.
JA: What inspired your room and how did you go about decorating the space?
AC: I wanted a light and airy room that was elegant and still comfortable. I chose Mother’s Day to celebrate women, mothers and life, so I was trying to capture a feminine salon that women dream of having.
I used lush textures to add comfort and silver and gold for sparkle.. The large crystal chandelier from Ralph Lauren Home really added the ‘pow’ and enveloping the woman of the house in glamour is essential! I wanted it to be glamorous but still very inviting and warm.

JA: What do you think about when choosing a design style for a space or a house?
AC: I always design around my client’s lifestyle. I think about how they want to live and feel in their environment; this is very important to me as a designer. I also take into account the architecture and environment surrounding the space.
JA: What are your tools to add glamour to a space?
AC: Glamor taps into an emotion and I think it's a really powerful design style. I use soft textures and colors; silver, which brings in old world traditions; flowers; candles; and music. So many things can set that glamorous tone, like an old Fred Astaire movie that just sparkles.
JA: If you had a “no budget” project with absolute design freedom, how would you decorate?
AC: I love a great flow in a home. I would add different elements to each room for uniqueness, but maintain a similar architectural element for continuity. Right now I am in love with De Gournay Metallic wallpaper, lacquered walls, glass and bronze spiral staircases.
