The Age of Comfort Presentation and Book Signing

12:00 - 12:45 PM

Pierre Frey, Suite 1612

How did the idea and accoutrements of "comfort" come into existence? In her latest book, The Age of Comfort: When Paris Discovered Casual - and the Modern Home Began, author and historian Joan DeJean hones in on the period when our sense of domesticity and leisure was permanently altered.

Until the late 17th century, the rich and powerful were always on formal display, but when Versailles began to go casual a new word was on everyone’s lips: comfort. Between 1671 and 1673, modern domestic architecture began, a field later named interior decoration was invented, the first comfortable armchairs went into use, and a  Parisian boutique began selling informal dresses made of cotton. By 1678, a Parisian newspaper declared, "In France today, everyone wants to be comfortable."

Join us for a presentation and book signing by Joan DeJean, followed by a light lunch.
