In the News: Elle Decor's Modern Life Concept House (Part 1 of 2)

We couldn't pass up the opportunity to take the VIP tour of Elle Decor's Modern Life Concept House with Executive Director of Brand Development Ellen Rubin. The magazine’s first-ever New York showhouse features 10 A-List Designers to Watch, each of whom was paired with a luxury brand to design a room.

The 10 designers include five from Elle Decor's 2010 “A-List Designers to Watch” and five from this year’s “Designers to Watch” list, announced by Editor in Chief Michael Boodro.

"The ten emerging young design stars are a perfect complement to the contemporary brands with which they are paired," said Boodro. "Together, these teams will realize Elle Decor’s vision for its ‘house of tomorrow.'"

The 2011 A-List “Designers to Watch” include:  Rafael de Cardenás of Architecture At Large who will be designing on behalf of Extremis; Aurelién Gallet for Flou; Beth Martin for Calligaris; Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe of Nickey Kehoe for Restoration Hardware and Sara Story for The New Traditionalists. They are joined by last year’s designers: Jesse Carrier of Carrier and Company, designing on behalf of Room & Board; Oliver M. Furth for USM Modular Furniture; Grant K. Gibson and Katie Lydon for Bosch; and Marie Turner of M. Elle Design for LEMA.

"It's really a three dimensional representation of what Elle Decor is about," said Ellen. "This house embodies what we feel is the present and future of design. We chose a Modern Life Concept House to celebrate where we see ourselves and where we're going."

While each designer was paired with a contemporary brand to work with, we made sure to find a few pieces in each room from showrooms in the DDB. A few pieces we loved included a carpet from Stark and a chunky chair from Kravet.
