In the News: Allegra Hicks Shares the Four Elements with Lee Jofa (Part 1 of 2)

We recently got the chance to join Allegra Hicks at the Lee Jofa studio in Manhattan for a preview of her newest collections for the company. Allegra has expanded her work with Lee Jofa once again with her newest Islands collections—and this time, Allegra's inspiration came from the four elements of the earth. Paired with her experience and love for watercolor paints, the combination of fire, wind, earth, and air are expressed in Allegra's collections with the whimsical freedom of watercolor paints touched to canvas.

"The use of watercolors has always marked the start of my creative process," says Allegra. "Once the paintbrush touches the paper, the color chooses its own path from which an organic flow originates with a freedom found in few other mediums. It is important to me that my fabrics remain true to this initial inspiration."

At a recent press preview at the Lee Jofa's studio, Allegra unveiled the four collections and explained each of the elements expressed in her designs.

"My latest collections of woven fabrics were inspired by the elements. Every design and color is derived from aspects of earth, fire, air, and water. Starfish collection represents water. From a light and fresh aqua to a deep and moody midnight blue, to me, this design represents the ever-changing, mysterious, and colorful facets of the ocean.

"Calypso collection represents fire. Flames ripple, lick, and flicker in a million unexpected directions; they envelop things in their path. I tried to capture this essence in Calypso. I have always been mesmerized by fire because it can be romantic, warm, and cozy, but it can also be dangerous. I look at Calypso and see any one of those moods come through."

Check back with GoDesignGo tomorrow to hear what Allegra tells us about her final two collections with Lee Jofa and more on her inspiration for the woven fabrics.
