Q&A with ‘Young Traditional’ Jeff Andrews

Jeff Andrews is another of tradhome's Young Traditional Designers to keep your eyes open for this year. He spent some time with us in New York recently to tell us what he's loving this Spring and a few of the first things he did when the weather finally warmed up.

GDG: What were some of the Spring 2011 products you were most looking forward to this year?

JA: I couldn't wait to see what Kyle Bunting was up to! He always has amazing new ways to use hide, such as wall upholstery and rug designs. I also recently saw Maya Romanoff's exciting new line of fabrics, which I love! They can be used for drapery, upholstery and wallpaper. I was also so looking forward to seeing what Jean de Merry would do this Spring. I love their gorgeous new fabrics, custom accessories (like wall mirrors and lighting) and of course, their furniture!

GDG: What should we keep our eyes open for this Spring?

JA: From us, look for pastels mixed with grays, layers of pattern, driftwood inspired furniture and new projects on my website!

GDG: What is the first thing you did once the weather finally warmed up?

JA: Worked on getting a tan and shopped, shopped, shopped! I’m always on the lookout for fabulous new finds!

GDG: Can you share any fun examples of going stir crazy this Winter?

JA: Living in California, we haven’t had the crazy winter you had in New York.  We did have a lot of rain this winter; the upside is that my yard looks amazing!

Q&A with ‘Young Traditional’ Ryan Korban

Interior Designer Ryan Korban is one of tradhome's Young Traditional Designers to watch this Spring. He shared his thoughts on all of the things he's looking forward to and what he’s looking to for inspiration.


GDG: What are you looking forward to this Spring?
RK: Believe it or not I tend to lean towards a darker color palette in the springtime. I usually play with light colors during the winter and go richer in spring. I love seeing what Italian brand Dedar does. I am really into to jewel tones right now. Blood red and emerald green are at the top of my Spring must haves. I am always looking forward to what Flair home collection does, as well. I think it's more interesting to see what vintage piece retailers introduce for Spring.





GDG: What should we keep our eyes open for this Spring?
RK: I am always looking to hotels for inspiration — places like the Carlyle and the Cosby to see how they change the ambiance for the Spring season. What scents are being used? What flowers? They are an amazing authority on a new season. I am also looking towards the new fashion collections of designers like Balenciaga.





GDG: Is there anything that you can't wait for this season?
RK: When the weather gets warm I start to go to a lot of shows and concerts. Every spring I try and see something every week. I also get really into flowers. Once the weather hits a certain temperature, I am at the florist weekly. I also turn up the AC and pull out more fur!





GDG: Can you share any fun examples of going stir crazy this Winter?
RK: In the Winter I can’t be left alone for too long or I start to decorate! That's usually the problem with being stuck inside for me!

Q&A with ‘Young Traditionals’ Jayne & Joan of 2Michaels Design (Part II)

We got the chance to chat with Jayne and Joan Michaels of 2Michaels Design, the New York City-Based firm founded by the sisters. Here’s what we learned about the colors and patterns they're expecting to see this Spring.

GDG: What do you recommend we watch for this Spring?

J+J: Aside from the yellow colors that our friend sent us pictures of at the recent Milan Furniture Fair, we're looking forward to a lot of bold, geometric flower patterns.

GDG: Any fun examples of this Winter really getting to you?

J+J: I [Jayne] actually LOVED Winter this year in New York City! Joan and I are Russian so when the weather was bitterly cold, I would simply imagine Joan and I in the Russian movie, Dr. Zhivago. For us, there's nothing more exciting then a good snowstorm!

Q&A with ‘Young Traditionals’ Jayne & Joan of 2Michaels Design (Part I of II)

Identical twin sisters Jayne and Joan Michaels make up the New York-based 2Michaels Design, which was named one of tradhome's Young Traditional Designers to watch. The sisters shared with us what they've been loving this season and what they’re looking forward to.

GDG: What are some of the top Spring collections that you're most looking forward to seeing?

J+J: It's so hard to pick only one. We're really excited to see ALL the designers this Spring! There's such an interesting mix this season!

GDG: What are you particularly loving right now?

J+J: The color yellow. A friend has been sending us pictures from the recent Milan Furniture Fair held two weeks ago and it's full of yellow!

GDG: What is the first thing you can wait to do once warm weather sets in?

J+J: Gallivanting on the beach with our dogs!

Q&A with “Young Traditional” Nina Freudenberger of Haus Interiors

Nina V. Freudenberger of Haus Interiors is next on the list of tradhome's Young Traditional Designers. Originally from Munich, Germany, Nina's passion for interiors started when she was just three years old, playing with Lego blocks. We met up with Nina to talk about her plans for Spring and what she's excited for.

GDG: What are you looking forward to this Spring?

NF: I am so excited by the new David Weeks lighting collection! His designs are so innovative and truly a work of art. I also love following young designers like Suki Cheema, who has come out with really beautiful and strong graphic textiles.

GDG: What should we keep our eyes open for this Spring?

NF: A big trend I see coming out right now is tie-dye fabrics and wall-coverings. I love the Anniversary Snowflake collection by Maya Romanoff at Bergamo. The young designer Eskayel also has some incredible new tie-dye patterns that I think are also going to be a total hit.

GDG: Is there anything that you can't wait for this season?

NF: I will absolutely be trying to spend as much time outdoors as possible! We are working on designing a few homes on Long Island so we will be heading out there quite a bit. It won’t be the beach but it will be nice to head out of the city on those warm days!

GDG: Can you share any fun examples of going stir crazy this Winter?

NF: This was a tough New York winter but it will make the upcoming Summer even better! I took a few trips throughout the Winter to Tulum and Paris for the furniture fairs—both to escape the cold and be inspired!

Q&A with “Young Traditional” Amy D. Morris

Amy D. Morris of Amy D. Morris Interiors is another of tradhome's Young Traditional Designers to watch this Spring. Amy shared her thoughts with us on all of the things she's looking forward to as well as her favorite colors the season.

GDG: What are you looking forward to this Spring?

AM: Gabriath and Paul’s new spring collection and Jim Thompson No. 9 fabrics. Some fun prints that we tend to lean toward are China Seas, Celerie Kemble and Amy Karyan — I am anxious to see what prints they will introduce this spring! My favorite showroom in Atlanta is R Hughes, so they're another showroom I'm looking forward to seeing this Spring!

GDG: What should we keep our eyes open for this Spring?

AM: Definitely keep your eye out for pops of color and bold prints. Just a little bit of color can add so much personality to a room. My favorite color is purple because it's so happy! I'm thinking we'll see a lot of it this Spring.

GDG: Is there anything that you can't wait for this season?

AM: I am looking forward to weekends at the lake with friends and family.

GDG: Can you share any fun examples of going stir crazy this Winter?

AM: Well, I don’t know if you heard that entire city of Atlanta shut down for a week due to a couple inches of snow, but that is enough to drive a person crazy. I could not leave my house for an entire week!

Q&A with "Young Traditional" Lisa Sternfeld of Studio LSID

We loved chatting with New York-based designer Lisa Sternfeld who is one of tradhome's 20 Young Traditional Designers to watch this Spring. Lisa founded Studio LSID in 2006 and she readily shared her thoughts on what’s hot this Spring.

GDG: What collections or designers are you really looking forward to seeing this Spring?

LS: I’m really excited about all of the historically significant fabrics at Clarence House, as well as Oscar de La Renta’s line at Lee Jofa. I'm excited to see Fortuny's new showroom and the amazing spring color palette from Farrow & Ball. I'm also really looking forward to all of the upcoming Spring exhibits at New York’s greatest museums!

GDG: What should we keep our eyes open for this season?

LS: Keep an eye out for vibrant color this Spring! All of the regal hues of yellows, blues and greens are simply beautiful.

GDG: What are some of the first things you're planning on doing once the weather is warmer?

LS: Spring-cleaning! I’m looking forward to finally putting away all of my heavy coats, boots and winter dressing!
