DDB Spring Market Buzz: Alexander Gorlin’s Newest Book

New York-based Architect Alexander Gorlin joined the DDB's Spring Market festivities at an event with Moura Starr and Potterton Books for the release of his latest book Tomorrow's Houses.

Tomorrow's Houses is a photo-rich presentation of modernist houses in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, built during the early twentieth century through the 1960s. Alexander places these beautiful houses in their proper historical context as examples of the best of early and mid-20th-century American modernist architecture.

We asked Alexander about his writing process for Tomorrow's Houses.

"I write for the parties!" Alexander said. "Honestly, though, I really enjoy the research that goes into putting together a book. There's also nothing better than holding the published book in my hands once everything is finally finished."

Alexander told us he thought Eliot Noyes' house in New Canaan, CT, was one of the projects in the book that best defined the theme of the book. “His house is modern and earthy, so it really combined the best of shelter as well as nature," he said.

Tomorrow's Houses is now available through Potterton Books online and in the DDB and PDC showrooms.

Sustainable Spotlight: Crystal Light

The sparkling installations of crystal and light floating throughout the Moura Starr showroom are impossible to ignore—but why try?

Interior Designer and Moura Starr Sales Associate, Fiona Mackay, invited to wander the showroom with her. "Our lighting is also sculpture. It’s installation art that also serves as lighting," she said. "The way they take space in a room truly draws the kind of attention to the eye that makes you want to stay in that room."

The showroom’s founder Moura Starr blends interior design, fashion and architecture in her design philosophy, and crafts each piece by hand using luxurious fabrics, woods, and crystals—and sustainable practices.

”My favorite piece in this showroom changes everyday but I’ve always been partial to the Butterfly Chandelier. You can't ignore it's delicacy and beauty, can you?" Fiona asked us.

We certainly couldn't.

Where in the DDB?

Any thoughts on which DDB Showroom we snapped these two photographs in? We want to know if you know the building well enough to guess, so leave a comment with it and the answer will be in next week's "Where in the DDB?" post.

Hint: This showroom is currently renovating a new room, which will be devoted exclusively to their wallpaper.

For those of you who guessed which showroom last week's "Where in the DDB?" post was, if you guessed Moura Starr, you're right!
