Kvadrat celebrates an icon

With a design that traces back to 1965, and one that remains among the Danish company Kvadrat's best sellers, Hallingdal 65 was the focus of an exhibition during ICFF. Designed by Nanna Ditzel, the wool-and-viscose textile captures the best of each material, which are both dyed before they are spun for added color depth. It is available in 58 colors ranging from neutrals to brights with contrasting warp and weft. It's been used as the upholstery on the Copenhagen public transit since it was first introduced. Kvadrat's textiles are available through Maharam in the U.S., at the DDB. A screen, titled Play, by Stephen Burks, is pictured above.

The Jil Sander shop in SoHo was the sight of a temporary exhibition during ICFF. The original exhibition (pictured below), on view in April in Milan during Salone del Mobile, brought together curators and designers from around the world to reimagine the iconic textile, with 32 pieces on view.



A capsule of those, including Jonathan Olivares's Chaise (below), were on view in NYC.

Maharam Keeps Up in the Digital Age

In today's digital day and age, we're all trying to be as tech-savvy as possible. Maharam is taking it to a whole new level by marrying the worlds of art and design through an assemblage of large-scale, digitally printed wall installations known as Digital Projects.

Created by emerging and established artists, photographers, illustrators, fashion and graphic designers, the installations offer a sophisticated range of content intended for both commercial and residential interiors. The digital installations are an alternative to art and costly wall finishes typically used in high profile and public areas.

An evolution of the company’s longstanding practice of interdisciplinary collaboration, Digital Projects is a carefully curated initiative that will evolve into an expansive portfolio. Early contributors include Dan Graham, Karel Martens, Marilyn Minter, Paul Smith, and Fred Tomaselli, among others.

Livable Art

Transform your drab walls into an artistic masterpiece. "Echo, Wow and Flutter; Sideways, Flopped and Mirrored," a piece by New York-based collagist Fred Tomaselli, is an example from the extremely well-received wallpaper collection from Maharam-- "Maharam Digital Projects," launched last year. Tomaselli, an avid collector, and devoted to scouring interesting newspapers and fashion magazines for snippets of inspiring illustrations, created "Echo, Wow and Flutter..." by encasing dried leaves and flowers, an assortment of pills and clippings of body parts under a layer of transparent resin and atop a background of paint. From a distance, we see splashes of color and spirals enveloping spirals, but like most art, if you take a closer look, you can see what lies beneath. With these progressive mediums and designs, Maharam's digital projects makes it possible for patrons of the design world to actually take the gallery back to their homes.

Swan by Mats Gustafson for Maharam

Mats Gustafson is a New York-based illustrator whose paintings describe essential form through color and shape, without the use of line. He has collaborated with Maharam to create this incredible wallcovering, Swan, the culmination of an earlier series of drawings. Through chiaroscuro and vertical cropping suggestive of Japanese screens, Swan combines elegance and tranquility with drama and movement. Swan is sized and produced on a project basis.
