Traditional Swedish figurines, gnomes and statuettes abound at Country Swedish this holiday season.
Country Swedish Vice President Karin Karlander von Schmeling shared with GoDesignGo the history behind these delightful doodads.
"According to Scandinavian folklore, the, little Santa or Elf, was believed to have been the protector on the farms in Sweden. Tomten helped out on the farms and he also brought good fortune. And of course today, Tomten visits all the children for Christmas.
Lucia and her maidens, the little ladies dressed in white, come every December 13th, which is the longest night of the year according to the old calendar. Lucia comes with candles in her hair early before sunrise and sings Christmas songs. This event is celebrated in every home, school and office in Sweden and marks the beginning of the holiday season."
