If your client is expecting a newborn, Blue Bench offers an unconventional option for expecting parents who want to be surprised by the child’s gender—but don’t want to have to settle for a yellow gender-neutral room.
It means exactly what you think: starting from nothing more than your floor plan, Susan Johnson from Blue Bench takes charge of outfitting the room from top to bottom with furniture, accessories, carpeting, wall color, bedding and windows.
We’ll share a great story we heard from showroom representative Fran Herbstman about her daughter Stacey, who was vehement about keeping the child’s gender a secret:
Blue Bench co-founder Susan gave her furnishings options in both male and female colors. When she was far enough along to have the gender determined, Stacey gave the sealed letter to Susan to make the choices for the room. During the two days that Stacey was in the hospital after the birth, Susan went to work installing the little girl’s room.
"She didn't know the gender until she was holding her own daughter in her arms.” said Fran. “When Stacey brought her daughter home, we opened the door to the most beautiful baby girl's room we had ever seen. It really was perfect. Susan had even framed the pretty paper from the doctors' letter with big letters, reading 'It's a girl!'"
In case you wondering if the secrecy and planning were worth it, Fran added before we left, "The experience was so positive for everyone. My daughter even had Susan do it all over again when she was pregnant with her second child!"
