Guest Blogger and DesignIntake writer Julieta Alvarez continues her conversation with Holiday House showhouse designer Ally Coulter. Here's more from Julieta and Ally.
JA: What are the latest trends or classics you are madly in love with?
AC: I am more of a classic designer than trend designer. I want a room to withstand time like the way a great Chanel suit can—it stays timeless! Great upholstered pieces, silk rugs, amazing lighting and the right mix of layering is what I love.
JA: Who are a few of your favorite designers?
AC: I love Francis Elkins' work in collaboration with her brother David Adler these days!
JA: What advice would you give people who are starting out in the design business?
AC: Listen to your clients and understand their needs! Also, take a few business courses so you know how to run and manage your business. Really loving what you do makes you good at your job and makes your life so much happier!

JA: What is your favorite part of being a designer?
AC: I love what I do and feel lucky to enjoy my work so much. I am grateful for having such interesting clients because I learn and grow from each client. I thoroughly enjoy creating a client’s home and to be able to translate how someone wishes to live is exciting. Creating something that exceeds a clients’ vision is a great privilege for me!
JA: What is the most challenging part of being a designer?
AC: The hardest part is the many layers involved in project management and control. As you become seasoned, this aspect does become easier but there are always bumps and issues in a project. It's how you manage these issues and overall concern for your client’s investment that makes a good designer truly great.
JA: What are your favorite sources for buying textiles, furniture and wallpaper?
AC: I adore Ralph Lauren Home and product because it evokes an emotion and lifestyle. With each new season come new and exciting products. I also adore the Duke Bar, a throwback to a different era and time when we would relax and unwind at the end of the day—iPads and iPhones not allowed!
I also love Holland & Sherry's lush cashmere and bespoke rugs that are simply to die for, and Nancy Corzine has amazing sofas, textiles and Lucite products that make any home glamorous!
