Save the Date: Potterton Books Presents Donald Albrecht on 'Cecil Beaton: The New York Years'

Curator Donald Albrecht discusses the relationship between London-born photographer Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) and New York City  as part of the Potterton Books Fall Lecture Series.

Beaton made his first trip to New York in the summer of 1929 when an exhibition opened at the Else de Wolfe Gallery. Despite Conde Nast firing him over an anti-semitic slur published in Vogue in 1938, Beaton flourished there. Cecil Beaton: The New York Years, was published in 1938 in London and discusses Beaton's relationships with quintessential figures of the New York art scene, including Greta Garbo and Andy Warhol.

The richly illustrated catalog includes previously unpublished letters and over 200 photographs and drawings, many in color and never seen before. The exhibition is on display at the Museum of the City of New York now through February 2012.

The book discussion takes place October 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the Grolier Club in New York City. Admission is $30 and the book is available for purchase for $65. RSVP by emailing potterton.books@verizon.net or call 212-644-2292.
