Guest Blogger: Keith Lichtman Balances Form with Function (Part 2)

New York-based interior designer Keith Lichtman of KL Interiors has been sharing his tips for bedroom design. Keith tells us how he solved his design dilemma in his own bedroom when balancing form with function while maintaining style.

The armoire that I designed anchors the end of my bedroom opposite the bed and also adds a visual weight that is pleasing to the eye and balances out the room. Best of all, though, the armoire provides a tremendous amount of storage for clothing and miscellaneous things that few store-bought pieces could have offered.

I was able to designate the number of drawers, their exact location and their precise size by customizing the armoire's innards. The shelving inside the doors was all made to be adjustable and allows more than enough room for all of my folded clothing. One of my favorite features is that only 16 inches of depth is needed to accommodate all of this storage since a nearby closet holds all of my hanging clothes.

Additionally, there was no limit to the finish selections. The investment in a custom piece is well worth the cost, particularly for all of the advantages it offers.

Just as important to me, however, was leaving room to create a bedroom ambiance. By not building in the unit the full width of the wall, I allowed space to create a seating area complete with a leather club chair and cushioned footstool, a reading lamp and wall space for artwork. The bedroom can and should feel like something more than just a bed and some pieces of furniture. By customizing the storage, the end result was a perfect balance of form and function, storage and style.
