In designing and decorating the bedroom, one of my top considerations is always the need for balancing form with function. While challenges can present themselves in any room and at any stage of the design process, the bedroom can be especially difficult because of how personal it is. The room should reflect its owner's personality and mirror the exact idea of comfort and relaxation.

In my own space, the specific challenge was finding the right balance for clothing storage versus enough or too much “other decoration.” The last thing I wanted was for my bedroom to only serve the purposes of sleeping and storage. If nothing else, I knew that I had to leave room for style and ambiance to make it truly feel like my bedroom.

The first thing that should be done in this predicament is identifying the function. Instead of purchasing a wide, low dresser or a tall but narrow chest—or even a combination of several, various-sized pieces—I decided to design a large-scaled custom armoire about five and a half feet wide and roughly seven feet high. My reasoning for the dimensions? The impact of the piece, due to its size and placement in the room, is astounding—it screams with my personality and helps add a bit of that 'me' touch I'm looking for.

Stay tuned for Keith's solution for balancing form and function in bedroom design and learn his creative tricks for saving space without compromising style.
