Guest Blogger: Keith Lichtman on Being Your Own Best Client (Part 2)

New York-based interior designer Keith Lichtman of KL Interiors has been sharing his experience with becoming his own best client. Keith recently purchased a home in New York City, and today he tells us how to triumph over a space with too little light.

People mistakenly think that white will brighten and lighten the space. The end result, in fact, is usually sterile and clinical looking, which is certainly not the atmosphere I wanted for my 1920’s, architecturally detailed apartment! White also poses an issue when it is cast in shadows as it can look dirty and unintentionally grey. This was also not the look I was after.

So instead of going with white, I painted my walls a warm and glowing golden, mustard color. In doing so, a white that may have looked overly clinical or unfortunately grey becomes a far away thought when you step into a room with warm tones like a mustard color.

I also strongly believe that the more your walls are sufficiently broken up and interrupted (in a good way) with doors, openings, and windows, the richer and more saturated the colors you can “get away with” get. These rich and more saturated colors help to create that enveloping, jewel box environment, which warms a space up and gives it that extremely natural look you're looking for without natural light.
