WESTWEEK Buzz: Lori Dennis: Polyester, The New Chic

Thought polyester was either a thing of the past or only for the hospitality industry? Think again. Lori Dennis, star of HGTV's The Real Designing Women, discussed fabrics and materials at Thomas Lavin’s event during WESTWEEK.

Ranae Ahrens, USA managing director of Création Baumann, was also there to talk about the Swiss textile company's highest standards of sustainability and eco-friendly practices. She showed various fabric options that are sustainable, healthy, durable and luxurious.

"Polyester is not something that people feel like they can't go near anymore!" said Lori. "Specific products are made out of 100% recycled polyester and you would never know the difference - whether you're looking at it or touching it. And believe it or not, everything from heating, cooling and down to the very fabrics we use in our homes affects our inside air quality."

"When almost 100% of the air we're breathing indoors can be potentially toxic to ourselves, our children and our pets, we have to be aware of the health risks we take when we're outside," said Lori. "I always thought that inside air was healthier. All the trucks spewing smoke outside and factories and smokers made me certain that breathing inside air was safer-but it's not."

Lori shared the harmful design techniques that can easily be changed to promote healthy air in our homes. "These statistics aren't scare tactics. The fact of the matter is, if it costs the same amount of money to have LEED certified design in your home as it does to avoid them, and its 100 times healthier for you and your family, then why not do it?"

Lori offered a wealth of information, having just published a sourcebook on where to buy high-end sustainable furniture and accessories, window treatments, fabrics, surface materials, appliances, plants, and more.
